Dozens of employees of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) did not receive their October salary after the institute’s president, Márcio Pochmann, ordered the full deduction of the days worked during the strike that took place in August and September.

The measure affected especially workers in the state of Bahia, where participation in the stoppage was the most significant.

Following the decision, the union representing the staff sought to overturn the discount and appealed to the ministries of Planning and Management and Innovation in Public Services. The ministries requested that the institute suspend the deductions in the week preceding the second round of the national elections.

Pochmann did not accede to the request, and negotiations did not resume. Union representatives indicated that the president has not met with the current board of the institute, which was elected in October of the previous year. The union also raised concerns about deductions applied to employees of the Justice sector, arguing that such reductions should have been made only after a bilateral agreement.

In a formal statement, the IBGE asserted that it operates with institutional autonomy and complies with the norms and guidelines governing the Federal Public Administration. The institute said it followed the directives issued by the Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services, specifically the Instruction Normative SRT/MGI No. 49. It also communicated to the union that any negotiations would be initiated after the electoral deferral period.
